The army of fifty men stood before the Gates built along the mountain. Every City outpost soldier stood ready, Their leaders had found location of a mass population of undead. Slywolf, Flameing ice wolf, Shade Slayer, Reaper and Rein all watched in the front lines of the armies. Shade Slayer had finally returned after running a expedition to a city far up in the north. It was two months after the war at north point.
Wolf squinted then pointed with his sword.
“Look”
There was a large creaking and snapping noise as the Gates slowly swung open. On the horizon armoured undead dotted the fields.
“Weapons on the ready” Rein shouted out to the group
The men unsheathed their blades and let out a war cry. Shade slayer in the lead ran towards the undead. The undead marched slowly towards them.
“Catapults!” shouted a war general,
In the back of the army catapults followed. The undead where about a acre away of the army of men. They had set up camp by the catapults.
“Reaper take patrol of ten archers and set up in the mountain side, you’ll attack from above” Reaper nodded his head in response.
“Rein I want you to attack the corner of there army”
“what of us?” asked wolf
“I want you two to lead the main attacks along side me”
“Once you reach your positions let me now”
The groups departed while Shade Slayer, Flame and Sly stood in wait. Reapers signal came first not long after so did Reins.
“Alright lets go”
Shade Slayer unsheathed his blade and walked towards the army of undead.
Reaper Sat in the cliffs above the army, Undead as far as the eye could see. The Darkened Sun peeked over the shadowed cliffs afar, Rain began to fall at Reaper’s feet. He smiled the rain would serve a good cover for his group of archers and mages. The undead army bore little to no Armour but the rain had become a down pore of relentless water, Reaper drew his bow and took aim at one of the undead in the lead as did the other men in the cliffs, they sat and waited for the undead to come to life. Shade Slayer had come close to the army now yet they still didn’t move an inch. Reaper signalled He was ready as did Magic Rein, Shade Slayer and the Army of Soldiers marched closer the undead still stood still as stone, The rain hadn’t subdued Reaper stared down his arrow a single drop of water rested on the tip he heard the twang as he fired the arrow at the undead, he heard the crunch of it’s skull as the arrow made contact, the Bones of the undead clattered as they fell to the ground, a dark mist shot into the dark sky.
“Well that’s new” Reaper whispered
Arrows rained down on the undead but it seemed that each one that crumbled another took its place.
Rein and his group ran at the undead, attacking from the side. Rein’s Group was mostly made up of Spell Casters, Rein launched a fire ball killing a group of undead, the skeletons turned and ran at the group of Mages with blazing speed.
“How are they so fast” Rein thought to himself
Rein blasted a few more with ice, A black sword aimed at his head made contact, like smoke Reins body distorted from the blow, the undead looked left and right then soared forwards as a blast of electricity landed on its back. Rein stood behind it his face hidden by a dark hood. Rein turned to be face to face with a undead, it’s glowing ice blue eyes gazed at him a dark fire burned deep within, Rein leaped back as it brought its hammer down in front of him, He leaped to his left then back again, the undead would stop at nothing to see him dead. The hammer wielding undead still swung at Rein he ducked then grabbed the hilt of the hammer it began freeze in his hands the ice crept up and began to take hold of the undead’s body, the ice covered the skeletons entire body, Rein hit it with the palm of his hand smashing it to bits.
Flameing ice wolf charged full sprint with his great sword hitting undead left and right, he hit one in the knee then leaped over it to strike another down. Flame turned and blocked a hit to the thigh he swung his sword over making the tip of the undead’s blade land in the pounded dirt with a flick of his wrist flame lunged it through the skeleton’s chest, a large axe wielding undead brute stomped towards Flame, It let out a Roar as it stared down at wolf. Flame Smiled he ran at the undead giant it lifted it’s axe above it’s head and swung down, Flame spun out of the way mid-spin he put his sword out hitting it in the back of the knee, it fell down to one knee he leaped up bringing his sword down through its head.
“To easy” Flame shouted a sense of competition in his voice
A small Dwarf looked up at him his beard braided and neatly trimmed
“Ha…that’s barely a prize…I’ll show you how a real dwarf does things” shouted the small man. He pulled a crossbow from his back and began firing away at undead.
“Your on old man” Flame said with a taunting laugh
“Hey!...you take that back, I may be old but I could take you down in a blink of an eye” warned the dwarf. Flame ran off it to the mass army of undead the dwarf put his crossbow back and pulled out his small duel wield hatchets and charge after Flameing Ice Wolf.
Sly surged at a group of three undead his katanas unsheathed in a flash he swept across them each one falling to there knees in sync. Sly jumped kicking one in the chest then back flipped off spun his swords and stabbed two undead that had ran up on him, he spun hitting one in the head, another ran at him he quickly slashed it’s arm away then cut it down. Sly ran forward killing any undead in his way. The catapults positioned behind him slowly crept up behind them. A hearty dwarf sat on it shouting orders at the men near them his small black beard carried with the gusts of wind that had came down from the mountains. He to bore a crossbow across his back it was a essential weapon amongst there kind. Sly watched as the catapults flung rocks at the undead, each one hitting it’s mark killing multiple undead at a time. Sly ran at a undead lopping it down then ran off into a small group of undead that had cornered a party of men.
Shade slayer struck another undead down watching as the shadowed mist fired off into the black oblivion which was the sky. Rain still poured down on them making the ground wet and slippery, mud was smeared over his armour and blade, undead continued to charge at him, he hit one in the knee making it buckle over, he spun and shoved his sword through another’s chest he pulled it out a few chips of bone followed, he spun the sword in his hand then brought it down on ones head, he heard one come up behind him he quickly elbowed it in the face making it close line it self on his arm, it still bore a soul…not for long, shade slayer plunged his blade into it’s chest like dust it faded away then blasted off into the sky. Shade slayer turned they had held there ground but more undead could still be seen on the horizon. Shade slayer turned and headed towards the catapults.
Reaper still sat in the cliffs, only a few undead made it up to there position to pose a real threat, Reaper was surprised to not see any type of archers amongst the skeletal soldiers, maybe their archers resided farther back. Reaper continued to fire down at them each arrow met it’s target, a few dwarfs had joined there ranks and where firing down at the undead with cross bows.
“Archer…come here” reaper shouted over the pounding rain
A elven archer ran over to him and crouched to listen
“I want you to lead this group until I return…understood?”
“B-b-b-ut sir”
“Understood” Reaper said sternly
“Understood sir” replied the Elf with a tone of strength and pride in his voice
Reaper nodded then began to run through the mountain towards the horizon.
Rein blasted more undead with magic the wet ground around him steamed due to his fire magic. Rein Charged at a pursuing undead freezing its entire body then smashing it with his fist. Rein looked around lighting crashed down before him.
“What in lore” Rein questioned
Another bolt blew a undead to bits. The battle field had become dangerous.
“Retreat!...Head to the catapults, any undead that follow will be killed”
The army of men turned and ran back to the catapults. The archers realised what had happened and started to send out a cover fire as did the mages.
Flame and the Red bearded Dwarf ploughed through the undead with ease, The dwarf ran and barrelled over a undead and began pounding it in the face letting out a proud laugh as he did. Flame put his sword through a undead’s chest. the dwarf had ran forward finished with the undead that lay on the ground its skull chipped and broken from the small dwarf punching it. Flame Could hear Rein shouting.
“Hey Dwarf” Flame said
He turned to see the Dwarf holding two skeletons about to bash there skulls together
“What!” the Dwarf shouted
“I think they ordered a retreat” flame replied back
“Now why would they do that…We are winning after all…at least it seems that way” The dwarf said with a grunt as he crushed the heads together
“Well we better head back”
“And leave all this free killin to got to waste…no I won’t have it” said the dwarf as he turned to kill another undead
“Stubborn dwarf…” flame whispered
“Say what was that” the dwarf questioned
“hmm oh that nothing” flame said in a mocking tone
The Dwarf went red with anger.
“Now you listen here boy…”
Flame grabbed the dwarf and began to drag him away towards the catapults.
“Put me down human…I’ll have you killed for this!”
Flame smiled “I’d like to see you try”
The Dwarf growled and muttered to himself as flame dragged him away from the battle.
Shade Slayer stood by the Catapults a few archers had stayed there as did warriors.
“Archers as soon as are men return I want you and the mages to kill anything that gets to close”
The lighting still crashed down killing tens of undead at a time. Shade Slayer turned and began heading back to his tent. Two elven guards stood outside it’s entrance. He nodded to them in acknowledgement they bowed their heads in return. His tent was quite large and well lit a small table sat in the far corner across from that was a bed, in front of the bed was a place for his armour and blade. Shade Slayer sat at the desk looking at the map laid out before him, If it was correct the field was supposed to run back hundreds of leagues and then abruptly stops to reveal a mountain hidden in mist.
“Wait what’s this” Shade said to himself
The map revealed a door not far from the place Reaper had been.
Reaper crawled along the cliff wall there was only enough room for him to place his feet and press tightly against the Cliffside. He suddenly stumbled on to a large path way heading upwards.
“Where’s the harm in it” Reaper said aloud
He began to climb the path small steps had been carved into the stone. The rain made it harder to reach the top but he had done it. He walked along the top the wind was harsh and made him shade his eyes most of his travel. He continued to walk along till the wind died down and he could see clearly. Another large staircase gazed up at him. He hated the idea but he had come this far, he placed his foot on the first step and began his trip down the mountain.
Sly stood leaned against a catapult he had a small stone between his fingers, it was black and shiny pointed at either ends. He closed his eyes and left his mind to only focus on the rock. There was pure silence then like a spark in the shadow of night he heard it, a hollow scream coming from inside. Part of the rock lived it wished to be free, it spoke to sly asking forgiveness for it’s terrible deeds, sly nodded. He placed the rock on the ground and grabbed a hammer that lay not to far from him. He lifted above his head and crushed the rock, a small black mist rose from the rock it swirled around Sly then shot into the sky.
Flame dropped the Dwarf by the group of others near a fire.
“Don’t let him out of your site” Flame told the dwarfs pointing at them
Flame headed towards Shade Slayer’s tent.
“Any discoveries?” flame asked as he walked in
Shade Slayer had his back turned to the entrance his head was down his nose buried in a book.
Flame walked around to face Shade Slayer, He grabbed the book from him and looked at the title.
“Lore’s myths and mysteries? Why are u reading this”
Shade Slayer didn’t reply just leaned against his hand and stared at the tent’s wall his mouth would twitch every so often showing he was talking to himself lost in thought. Flame put the book back in his hands instantly shade slayer began reading again.
“I’ll return later” Flame said as he walked out of the tent
He exited the tent, a gust of cold wind hit his face, a shout of anger and frustration came from the dwarf’s fire. Then laughter as a mage relit the flames with magic. Flame began walking to stare at the battlefield the lighting strikes had disappeared and the undead where completely gone. He spun around and began heading for the campfire when he was jumped from behind, whatever it was it weighed a lot he felt hair brush his neck he rolled over throwing the attack from him, he quickly drew a dagger. From the mud rose the red bearded dwarf.
“Do you know how long it takes me to clean this” shouted the dwarf
Flame began to laugh as he sheathed his dagger, he let out a hand to help the dwarf, the small man grabbed it and pulled flame down into the mud then crawled on top of him trying to punch him in the face, Flame grabbed the tiny fists but didn’t realise how much power dwarf’s had in their arms, the angered dwarf easily broke free leaping off flame’s chest. Flame jumped up his fists up and ready, he kicked the dwarf in the side of the foot causing him to fall down into the mud, the dwarf sat up and dove at his knee’s then rolled away causing flame to fall down. They both lay on the ground laughing.
“Even?” asked flame
The dwarf let out a laugh “Aye…we be even”
They both stumbled up and shook hands.
Reaper stumbled down the steps. A Black doorway towered above him. Reaper walked up to the door the handles rested inside the mouth of a dragon, it felt warm as if it where alive he pulled the door open and stepped inside his path was lit by torches.
“Just encase” Reaper said as he grabbed one off the wall
He walked forward, the obsidian walls showed no welcome to reaper as he walked the halls of the crypt. Nothing had stepped foot in here for centuries not even bugs. Reaper walked forward each step echoed down the halls. He walked out of the opening he now stood in a large cavern the walls where smooth as glass it seemed to go on forever.
“Good thing I brought these” Reaper said as he pulled out the teleportation stones
The stones began to glow purple then flashed and reaper appeared at the other end of the cavern he could just see the purple flash, showing that he was far away. His back faced the wall he turned to see what would come next. Before him sat doors as tall as the eye could see.
“By the avatars” Reaper murmured
One of the doors crept open reaper stepped inside, no light would welcome him here. He walked for what felt like forever till he reached another doorway, this one was smaller, he opened it and stepped out side, the scent of death tickled his nostrils, he covered his face with his sleeve and stepped forwards, a heavy mist blanketed itself here. At four hundred leagues away the army camp sat, reaper was truly alone now.
Rein sat up in his bed a strange noise was coming from outside his tent. He got his staff and stepped outside, the black bearded dwarf that had barked order’s sat curled up near the fire. A strange growling and whispering could be heard from somewhere behind his tent. Rein sparked a flame in his palm and crept behind his tent. Crouched over a bag of weapons appeared what seemed to be a small child actually was a goblin. It wasn’t any goblin he had seen, it’s ears where misshapen and it was skinny to the point each rib bone could be counted.
“Hey you” rein asked defensively
The creature let out a growl
“Seems temdir wasn’t as sneaky as thought he was” murmured the abomination
Rein looked at it questionly. “What are you doing here” Rein asked
“That be business for temdir and temdir only…now be gone from my sights I no longer wish for chat” replied the creature with a hollow insane laugh.
“Leave…now” Rein said
“Maybe temdir no longer wishes to leave this place…maybe he likes it here now”
Rein flared his flame spell “Don’t tempt me creature”
The crouched being let out a childish laugh which soon deepened as it tilted it’s head back in a loud scream. It’s amber eye’s gazed at rein each time it blinked it first set of lenses would go up and down the second set would left and right. Some of the people in camp and stirred and began to awaken.
“Seem temdir as woken some…looks like it’s his time to go” the creature said before it began to run away into the dark night. A few men walked up to rein.
“We heard laughter and screaming” a warrior said
“It was a creature by the name of temdir…it seemed to be goblin related”
There where murmurs amongst the still partially sleeping men. The dark bearded dwarf was awake again.
“Get to sleep you lolly gaggers you got fightin to be doing tis morinin” he said with a laugh a tankard came flying out of no where smacking him in the head, the red bearded dwarf flame fought laughed, the black bearded dwarf jumped off the catapult landing on the other, they rolled and scuffled on the ground. Rein and the others returned to there tents to rest for the fight tomorrow.
Shade Slayer sat in his tent still reading the book, He flipped the page and read.
“Wait” he said
He flipped back and peeled apart the old pages. The Gates they entered lay on the page as did the doorway he saw on the map.
“Finally” he thought to himself
He began to read about the gateway and the undead that resided here.
“Ancient warriors…forgotten by the people…forever cursed” he said as he read on.
He gazed at the sketch of the doorway, he read on for hours. “And at the end of the tunnel resides on the outside hidden by mist sits the undead city…a once noble place ruled by the kings of lore…now a plagued realm of despair…” Shade Slayer trailed off
Reaper walked through the mist his torch nearly burnt out. He felt the crunch of a bone underneath his boot he looked down to see the arm of a skeleton broken in half from his foot.
“Well that’s welcoming” reaper said
He continued on, He stopped he could see his reflection in front of him. He tilted his head in confusion. He put his hand out slowly stepping forward, his hand hit the invisible wall his hand became drenched by water.
“What in the…”
It tightened around his wrist and pulled him in. he fell onto his hand and knee’s his body fully dry. He felt a sword touch his throat he slowly gazed up his eye’s made contact with what appeared to a undead king.
“Chain him” said the ghostly figure
Two undead walked forward grabbing at reaper he jumped up, head butted one then leaped to the left and shot the other with his bow. Out of the mist three spear wielding undead ran at reaper, he quickly killed all three. The king undead smiled as reaper killed the undead.
“Are you amused by their suffering?” Reaper asked anger in his tone
The king let out a dry laugh. Then faded into the mist.
Flame Stood in the front lines the red bearded Dwarf Meoden stood beside him
“twenty gold coins I kill more then you” said the dwarf
“I’ll take that action” Flame said with a smile
The undead could be spotted on the horizon, there was a wall of mist behind the skeletons. Flame and the dwarf where the first to start running at the army, soon the others followed. Flame cut one down then hit the other in the face with the hilt of his blade. He spun and stabbed one through the chest. The undead seemed less powerful today, Flame could tell. A undead ran at him he blocked the downward strike then quickly cut across falling the undead. Meoden was fighting three undead at a time, he jumped to the side causing the undead to hit its comrade. The other one Meoden simply threw his hatchet into its skull then jumped up and pulled it down ripping the head clean off. Flame killed five more undead within a minute, one came sprinting at him swiftly flame kicked it in the chest then stabbed downwards at the skeleton.
Rein and the mages blasted groups of undead away every second, archers sat in the back with the catapults. Rein stomped his foot three metres away from him a rock spike shot a undead into the air, he raised his other hand water seeped out of the ground he blasted one of the undead sending its bones flying. Rein spun and grabbed a undead’s throat, the blue glow in it’s eyes went orange as it’s soul lit and burnt to a crisp. He continued to fight killing multiple undead with ease.
Sly ran dodging swings from undead at all directions. He quickly killed ten undead, another five ran at him he blocked a swing from one sliced it’s chest spun stabbed another stepped back drove his blade through the other one, the two others stared at him, he spun his blades in his hand then stepped towards them.
Shade Slayer grabbed the undead and pushed it into the charging skeleton’s knocking them down a few still ran forward. He swung hitting one across the face, he grabbed the arm of another making it drop it’s sword he head butted it making it fall to the ground. Three others came at him he dodged one blow, swung and hit it in the leg, the other one ran at him he stepped aside kicking it as it passed. The other ran at him, he stuck his sword out making it impale it’s self.
Reaper fought more undead, the king was no were to be found. Reaper ran through a small corridor. A undead rouge attacked him from behind with a small dagger, he grabbed the skeleton’s arm and flipped it over his shoulder knocking it to the ground before it could get back up reaper impaled it with his sword. Reaper ran further up the stairs. Smashing through gates and doorways only to find more stairs and undead waiting. Reaper neared the top, he fought more undead, one ran at him he ducked then tilted it over the edge, watching as it fell hundreds of feet. he reached a giant doorway a small group of undead stood armed and ready before them. Reaper smiled as he stepped towards them spinning his blade three times before charging at them.
Shade slayer neared the mist, the undead where falling much quicker then before. Shade slayer easily killed seven undead then ran forwards. He had got hit on the arm by a blade but ignored the pain and continued to fight. The catapults where one of the main causes of their quick killings. Shade slayer ran forward Flame, Meoden, Sly and Rein all beside him. There where few undead left between them. Flame and Meoden attacked a group of twenty undead. While Rein and Sly executed a few more. Shade Slayer had entered the mist and was running full speed towards the city. The others quickly met up with him. He nodded to them then stepped into the city. Each of them followed.
Reaper kicked over the last undead in front of the gates. He stepped forwards the doors flew inwards the king undead sat on this golden throne, he had a large golden mace in his hand. The king slowly rose out of his throne his red gold trimmed cape dragged behind him. His crown was a red velvet golden crown. His armour also looked like his cape and crown. Reaper pulled out his bow and shot at his head. A golden shield in a flash appeared on his arm and deflected his arrow. Reaper fired six more before having to leap as the king swung downwards at him. The tiled ground was smashed. The king slowly raised his mace, he began swinging back and forth at Reaper’s head. He ducked and swerved leaped and ran, but the king wouldn’t let up. Shade Slayer and the others burst though the doorway. Rein blasted the king with magic while Meoden shot at the king with his cross bow. Flame Sly and Shade Slayer all charged at him ducking and dodging but at the same time slashing at the king. Reaper ran and jumped in slashing at the king. Reaper hit him in the back of the leg. Meoden Ran pulled out a small grapple hook that sat at his waist he spun it a few times before throwing it hooking the kings crown. The king stood up and jumped at Reaper and Sly they both rolled out of the way. Meoden went flying.
“Yee-ha” he shouted as he flew through the air
He landed on the kings head the crown had fallen off because of the grapple. He loaded his crossbow and fired down in the kings skull then leaped off. Pulling out his small hatchets as he hit the ground and rolled away. Flame ran hitting the king in the chest then the arm. Sly kicked the king in the chest and sliced his forehead with his katanas at the same time. Rein jumped landing on the kings skull with his hands. Fire burst out of the kings eyes. The undead leader stumbled back clawing at his eye’s as they smoked and smouldered. Shade Slayer ran and hit the king in the knee as he slid on his past him. Reaper quickly ran up drew three arrows and shot the king in the forehead. A rumble came form the thrown as it sunk and collapsed into the ground, the pillars began to fall through the floor.
“Go,Go!”
They all ran out the doorway and started heading down the stairs. The king sat one his knees his body shaking as if he was laughing. A black mist seeped from his eyes. His jaw opened and the mist crept outwards, it began to swirl his body it engulfed then fired through the ceiling of the throne room in to the sky. Meoden kicked a undead as it ran at them. It rolled down the stairs and hit the bottom as a pile of bones. The city was falling apart, with the king dead all the suffering could end the sky lightened and the wind died down. The six of them returned to the army and began to march out of the land, the city completely crashed down the blast sent all the mist away and the gates crumbled and disintegrated, after this day no one would have to fear this area any longer.
